Recipe: Medicinal Maca Stress Support Smoothie (With Reishi Mushroom)


This is a smoothie with a difference. It actually contains some really medicinal foods, which takes the term “Food is Medicine” quite literally!

Discovering the wholefood smoothie is a wonderful joy in itself. Not only are they delicious, healthy, quick and easy to make, they are also incredibly convenient if you don’t have too much time for a sit down meal. It’s great to take with you to work or the gym. You can very easily pack a lot of nutrition into one glass, that will keep you going until your next meal.

This recipe contains two of my favourite medicinal foods. The first is Maca, which I absolutely love, especially in smoothies. Maca is a root plant that looks like a cross between a turnip and a parsnip and is native to the Andes in Peru, South America. It is said to have hormone balancing properties, is adaptogenic (it helps us adapt to stress) as well as containing an abundance of minerals, vitamins and amino acids. I haven’t actually tried it in its wholefood form, only in powdered form. I love the taste of it but some would argue this! Never mind, that means more for me!!

The second of my favourite medicinal foods is Reishi mushroom, which is a powerful adaptogenic medicinal mushroom that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years to promote wellbeing, adaptation to stress and also has immune system and anti-microbial properties. Medicinal mushrooms are one of my secret health weapons and I absolutely love them! (Check out my post on medicinal mushrooms here)

As an option, if you want to add some protein into this and make it even more satiating, you could crack a raw egg or add a scoop of your choice of protein powder (preferably organic and with no nasty crappy ingredients)

Ingredients (makes 2 portions)

2 medium sized ripe bananas, frozen

250ml coconut milk

250ml water, preferably filtered

1 heaped tablespoon Maca powder

1 teaspoon cacao nibs (for sprinkling on top)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract or powder (or 1/2 vanilla pod or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla paste)

2 teaspoons Reishi mushroom powder or 2 sachets of this Reishi blend powder



Prep time: 2 minutes

Making time: 2 minutes

Put all ingredients except cacao nibs into a blender.

Blend on high for about 20 seconds.

Pour into a glass or mug and top with cacao nibs.

Share the creamy deliciousness with a friend or save the second portion for yourself tomorrow!
